Uutterly entranced by Ernest Hemingway. A few weeks ago, I had severe writer's block from so many emotions, and so much anxiety. I figured I'd read a little bit of this legend's work just to get my juices flowing. His writings are like a dream, somehow having the ability to capture the emotions of the human spirit in all its essence. I've always had such great admiration for people who can explicate the elusiveness of heartbreak, or ineffable joy; Hemingway does that and goes on to add the spectrum of everything in between. With my 26 year love affair with books, its almost shameful to admit that I don't own a single one of his novels. Maybe that's what I will get myself for my birthday! An entire collection of his works :)
Anyway, here's a sliver from "The Old Man and the Sea." Needless to say, I read this paragraph and just sat in awe of the talent God gave this man to write:
"The old man was thin and gaunt with deep wrinkles in the back of his neck. The brown blotches of the benevolent skin cancer the sun brings from its reflection on the tropic sea were on his cheeks. The blotches ran well down the sides of his face and his hands had the deep-crease scars from handling heavy fish on the cords. But none of these scars were fresh. They were as old as erosions in a fishless desert. Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated."
I mean.. that line.. "They were as old as erosions in a fishless desert." BRILLIANT! Wishing that I had even a small sliver of the writing bug.. sad to say, I'm not doing so well in my Writing Composition class. I actually turned in an F paper, and it's got me so disheartened to say the least =/ Nevertheless, I will keep pressing on! I have exactly 30 days left of school, and just a few steps away from having my dreams fulfilled..can't stop now.
